Walkathon and Dream Run 31/01/16

SUNDAY, 31st JAN 2016. On this day, many Nagpurians walked. Some ran.

The atmosphere was charged with a huge happiness quotient. This wasthe scene at the Walkathon and Mini Marathon organized by the Rotary Club of Nagpur and Arneja Heart and Multi-speciality Hospital.

The 3 km walk started from C.P.Club Jogger’s Park to GPO to High Court and back past Japanese Garden. Each Walk was flagged off at intervals of 30 minutes. The 9 km Walk commenced at 6.30 am; followed by 6 km and 3 km.

The Mini Marathon too was flagged off at 7.30 am but took a different route.

The Walkathon has been organized by the Rotary Club of Nagpur year after year since 2005. With every passing year, the event has seen increased participation. While there are serious walkers who want to prove their mettle, there are some who walk to enjoy the ambience and there are some who come to enjoy the Sunday morning with friends.

This time the Walkathon was scaled up with the introduction of the Dream Run-a mini Marathon. This was a big boost to the serious runners of Nagpur and nearby areas.

Arneja Heart and Multi-Speciality Hospital are partners in this event and have been associated with the Walkathon since its inception

Each participant was tagged with a micro-chip to facilitate tracking. These RFID tags were fitted on every bib with a unique identification number for each participant. These were electronically read by readers set up at various points on the route. As soon as a walker/runner finished, he/she got an SMS  informing the participant of the time taken to finish the walk/run. This time technology helped in deciding the winner.

Three attractive prizes in each Category of Men, Women, Children and Veterans in each Walk, were given to the winners of the walkathon.

There was a bonanza in cash prizes for the winners in each category of the Run. For the age –group of 18 to 35 years, for Men and Women, the Winner got Rs.31,000. The 2nd Prize is of Rs.21,000; 3rd Prize of 11,000; 4th Prize of Rs. 7000 and 5th Prize of Rs.5000. The next ten winners got Rs. 2500 each.

For the age –groups of 35 years to 45 years, 45years to 55 years and 55 years and above there were Three Prizes in each Category.  First Prize-Rs.7500; Second Prize Rs.5000 and Third Prize Rs.2500.

Besides these Prizes, each winner got a free health check-up at Arneja Multi-Speciality Hospital valid for one year from the date of the event. Also each participant in the dream run received a 50 percent discount which will be applicable for three members of the family above 40 years for one year from the date of the event. This facility was made available on producing a Certificate of participation which was e-mailed to each runner.

Over a hundred Marshals on cycles and motor-bikes patrolled  the track to ensure safety, discipline and stop traffic at crossings.  This mega event was powered by Ambrosia Farm Villas and co-sponsored by Axis Bank, Godrej Properties and Coca Cola.

The event was supported by Dinshaw’s , Orange City Runners, Pro-HEALTH Foundation, Mayur Marbles, Devaki Investments, C.P.Club and LIC.
