Dear Rotarians,

The days of our youth are the days of our glory – wrote Lord Byron. This line comes to my mind when Rotary’s youth programs are mentioned.

September, the designated month for the youth… New Generations …. is for us to focus attention on youth development and the role they play in shaping the future of tomorrow. The experiences gained early in life never leave… they shape ones future. Our youth programs – Interact, Rotaract, RYLA and IYE – are some of the most significant programs of our movement.

My association with the New Generations Avenue has been a long and strong one and I have thoroughly enjoyed and continue to enjoy even today. First, as Chairperson and later as Director New Generations working for and with school and college kids brought immense joy, satisfaction and fulfilment. The focus of this month’s activities was directed towards the youth. The highlight was the Youth Festival which is gaining increasing popularity. This year 75 Colleges and Schools registered with approximately 450 participants. The Youth Idol event was keenly contested and the new format was not only a true test for the winners, but highly enjoyed by all. It sure was a great success.

Project Nutrition took off, Nirmalaya Collection during the Ganesh Visarjan witnessed an enthusiastic response, especially from our Rotaractors. ICF seminar on “Youth and New Generations” organized by our club was fruitful as it provided us Rotarians a critical assessment and insight about our youth programs.

I need to dwell on and get the attention of our “ZERO PERCENTERS”. I need to respond to the views and the growing concern amongst many of our members on this issue. There is no joy of Rotary without the joy of work. Being a Rotarian is a responsibility and I hope this responsibility is realized. Our Mentoring and Enlightenment committee is working and making efforts to ensure that our zero percenters begin to attend meetings, projects and get involved in the true spirit of Rotary.

As we begin to celebrate Dashera and Diwali, I wish each of you a bright and prosperous year ahead.

Thank You,

Tauby Bhagwagar
