On 8 th July 2012 the Pollution Control and Green City Committee in association with The Hitavada Twinkle Club organized a mammoth project of distributing 13,000 Neem seeds to the children of Class I to VI. The main objective of this project was to create awareness in kids on importance of trees in our lives & help them to connect emotionally with the trees by encouraging them to sow seeds nurture it, so that their own sapling can be grown. In this whole procedure of 8-10 weeks the child gets first hand experience on germination process & also learns to take care of their sapling.

The large amount of seeds & poly bags needed for this projects were provided by the Neem Foundation of India. Firstly an attractive poster full of cartoon characters was designed. The poster provided information on how to sow the seeds as well as stressed the benefits of neem tree. To encourage the kids to go ahead our sponsors spiced up by providing extra zing in form of free attractive gifts as well as discount coupons on presenting healthy saplings. Our sponsors were Dreamz Kids Wear, Nextlevel, Tauby’s, Bonsaii, Hotel Hardeo & Evista Eye Care.

Finally we were geared up for the project. On 8th July at 7.30 a.m. the venue, Gorakshan Dham dotted with colourful stalls saw a bursts of vibrant & excited kids accompanied by parents or elders enjoying themselves & collecting hordes of gifts. We were provided with a stall at a prime location. All the chairpersons along with our director & fellow Rotarians & Rotary anns ably assisted by Rotracactors distributed about 8000-9000 packets to the kids & explained them the importance & procedure of planting Neem tree. The distribution went on till 3.30 p.m.

The distribution of seeds continued in the following week in schools. The Schools were visited and chairpersons interacted personally with children explaining them importance of trees and about the initiative taken by the club.

The awareness created at Twinkle club drive attracted more schools to the project. A special request came from Principal of Little Scholar public school based on kamptee road. The committee distributed and interacted with 400 children at the school on 21st July 2012.

Mahdibagh colony – Lalganj area also requested for this awareness project within there society. Two hundred packets have been handed over to the residents of the colony, who have promised to grow saplings and submit back to us. They plan to plant about 50 saplings in their own premises.

The kids came up with many queries which we answered to their satisfaction. In return they promised us that they will plant the seeds & take good care of saplings. This will definitely develop an emotional bonding of the child with his/her sapling and make them an eco friendly citizens.

The kids were instructed to get their ready saplings by 15th September at any of the above mentioned outlets where in they can get their free gifts as well as numerous discounts.

As always our club members gave us the needed encouragement in form of their presence in large nos. We are very thankful to our sponsors, Interact Committee, Rotaract Committee, Neem Foundation & The Hitavada for providing us the necessary help & making the project a huge success. We hope through our endeavour we have developed a emotional bonding of the children with their saplings which would stay with them for the rest of their lives. This would definitely create a “Green Brigade” & serve the objective of Green City & Environmental Committee.
