UDAAN” – Hope Flies High- A Valentine’s Day with a Difference

On 14th Feb 2011 when the world celebrates the day of love with red roses, gifts and cards, the Welfare for Specially Abled Committee along with the Department of Social Welfare- Zilla Parishad, celebrated this day with a difference by organizing ‘UDAAN’A Day Long Sports Carnival for Specially Abled Children. 600 physically handicapped children from 42 Specially Abled schools of Deaf and Mute, Blind, Mentally Challenged and Physically Disabled category competed in 97 events from Morning 8.00 AM to Evening 7.00 PM at St. Ursula Girls High School, Sadar.

‘UDAAN’ was sponsored by one of the Leading Hospitals of Nagpur- Lata Mangeshkar Hospital, and was also supported by Mahavir International & Hotel Centre Point.

UDAAN was a mammoth project with participation of close to 1000 people, which includes 600 specially abled children’s accompanied by 150 Teachers and Technical Support Staff, with around 120 Rotarians and 100 Rotractors who served as volunteers in this noble activity.

The venue had a carnival look with thousands of  Red & White Balloons all over and all the 600 children’s wearing specially designed colorful ‘Udaan T-shirts & Caps’ added more colors to the entire area.

Opening ceremony was spectacular with March past by the special kids with their school banners , followed by flag hoisting by our chief guest Shri Ashish Deshmukh and Guest of Honour  D.G.Dr.Praful and  Mrunalini Mokadam and President Ganesh  and  Asha Joshi . The Mashal was lighted and the games were declared open by our chief guest, band was played for the opening ceremony by NCC and Guide Cadets of St.Ursula School

Around 97 competitions took place which included flat races, relay and fancy races like pick and run race, sac race, three-legged race, wheel chair race, spot jumping, lemon and spoon race, lagori, soft ball throw etc., the games were modified as per the category of disability and lastly musical chair was arranged, It was amazing  to see the deaf kids playing musical chair on the vibration of  the drum beat, you need to see this to believe it.

The Medals and awards distribution was done every hour by the who’s who of the Rotary District and by PDG’s and Past Presidents of our club, this entire award ceremony was single handedly managed by our own PP Vijay Naidu.

Apart from sports competitions the children were entertained by Magic Show, Tatoo Artists, Cartoon Characters and on the spot games conducted by Mamta Kanga, Deepa Jamwal & Archana Jhaveri.

The committee took extra effort in arranging  sumptuous delicacies throughout the day for the kids, on arrival breakfast was served to all; courtesy Manohar  and Anita Sharma, Rajiv and Rita Bhargava sponsored bananas while Shiraz Doongaji was courteous to send oranges for all. A Sit Down Lunch was the major highlight wherein the Rotarians & Volunteers themselves served these Children making them feel special, this lunch was sponsored by Jasbir and Renu Arora from Hotel Centre Point Group. Many Rotarians and Anns took active participation during this activity, Post lunch- delicious Dinshaws Ice Cream was enjoyed by the kid’s courtesy Nilufar Rana, Lemon and Orange drinks was served throughout the day to keep the kids refreshed and healthy to compete in various sports, and during evening the kids literally freaked out on Popcorn and Sugar Candy. A gift hamper having various utility items and Goodies was given to all the kids we thank Sunil Bhatia for arranging biscuits, Chocobytes and chocolates for the hamper and Manju, Smita, Ritika, Richa and Vandana for taking all the efforts in making the hampers . Not to forget a big thanks to Sohrab for designing and delivering on time all the material needed in this mega project, the project got its huge publicity due to the print advertisement carried out in the Hitavada and Navabharat which was all arranged by our own Nilanjan Bhowmick.

Heartfelt thanks to all the Rotractors of Sadabai Raisoni College, Hislop College, IGMC, Tuli College of Hotel Management, Tirpude College of Management, CICBMS and SRKNEC for their untiring efforts of taking care of the children’s throughout the day.

The report will not be complete without extending our special gratitude to Rtn. Praveen Chowrasia for his kind donation, Abhinav Thakur  for venue decoration and for Cartoon Characters, Kusum Pandey for packaged water, Appu Wadhwani & Manu Seth for helping in ground leveling, Madhusudan Mehadia for arranging sponsorship and we would like to specially mention about two  persons who on witnessing this heart touching event refused to charge us, they are  Mr. Kishore for the magician, tattoo artists , Popcorn & Candy Floss and Mr. Norman for the Sound and DJ.

A unique exercise along with CAFÉ of adopting these children for education was also been undertaken wherein Rs. 500/- per child is been collected in which the adopted child will be given school uniform (2 sets), shoes, schoolbag, slate, copies, water bottle, compass box, pencil set for 1 year. (Donations  are still accepted)

The technical assistance for the event was provided by Mr. Surendra Pawar- Dist. Social Welfare Officer, Zilla Parishad along with Mr. Umesh Warjurkar, Mr. Vishal Naik and their team.

Chairpersons Ashish Mehadia, Mahendra Kamath, Rita Bhargava, Divya Dass, along with Vijay Naidu, Manish Bhati and Jatin Sampat worked hard for the success of this noble and unique project.
